[MOD] [GITHUB] Oncology Department (v0.14.0.1 - 10/06/20)
Wed Dec 18, 2019 11:26 am
Department of Oncology (v0.14.0.1)
Hospital Services DLC Ready - No Conflicts Detected (25/04/20)Project Hospital 1.2 Patch 27 Ready - No Conflicts Detected (10/06/20)
Adds a new Oncology department to the game.
Oncology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of cancer.
What Does This Mod Add?
- 18 forms of cancer to the game.
- Total of 74 new diagnoses (this mod incorporates multiple stages and sub-types of a single type of cancer)
- New objects (Decorations and Furniture)
The mod also adds many new and relevant forms of treatment, examinations and symptoms, complete with custom icons and descriptions.
- Current Focus as of 10/06/20 -
- Salivary Gland Cancer (One done, hoping to add 2 more)
- Liver Cancer (Partially Done, I want to add at least 3-4 more types)
- Rework Adrenal Cancer
- More Plants
- New Sofa (Recommended by Serotonin)(Hoping I can make a modular one so players have more flexibility)
A bit about this Mod
On average I spend about four hours to add a single diagnosis to the mod, a lot of the time is spent on research and fact checking to try and make the symptoms, signs and treatments as accurate as possible.
Things won't be perfect though, I'm not a medical expert and there are limits in the game that restrict how accurate I can make things (your feedback is always welcomed though, especially if something isn't accurate).
This attempted accuracy does mean Oncology needs lab support fairly early on; it isn't recommended you build an Oncology department without at least histology and a CT or MRI.
To balance this demand, Oncology receives fewer patients than every other department (to help avoid bedlock) but the insurance payments for treatments are higher than the average diagnosis (roughly based on Australian treatment costs with some balancing).
Language Support
An incredible effort from the translators, please know your work is appreciated.

Roadmap:
- Continue to add different forms of cancer with their stages, treatments and symptoms. (Currently 106 diagnoses planned (01/02/20) and many more will be added during the research of others).
- Work on making the mod more realistic concerning treatments & diagnosis within the limits of the game.
Compatibility
Locked In
- This mod may be difficult or impossible to remove from an existing save. Please consider starting a new game to see if you enjoy the mod first.
Integrated Compatibility (This mod will utilise these mods if they are installed):
- Bedside Examinations by Butch
No reported issues with:
- Realistic Collapses and Disease Incidence by Butch
- Any Department Mod
Community Resource Pack:
Community Resource Pack version of Oncology is in the works and is high on my priority list. It will be a new mod to prevent existing users from having possible issues. This mod will no longer receive new content updates when CRP is eventually implemented, instead CRP will receive all new content and focus. This mod will however always be maintained for those who do not wish to change over for whatever reasons.
This mod should work perfectly fine with any other mod on the workshop, I’ve taken precautions to ensure it shouldn’t create any conflicts. If you do find any conflict with any mod, please report the mod the conflict occurred with and what happened (did my icons disappear or change? etc). I will look into these right away.
Known Issues
- You may experience longer load times with this mod (starting up the game and loading into a save). This is pretty typical with mods (across all games) especially as they get bigger and if you are subscribed to many. This shouldn't affect performance when you are loaded in though.
-==== IMPORTANT ====-
While this mod has been undergoing quite a lot of testing there may still be issues with it (bugs or balance issues), please, ensure you backup your saves before you install and use this mod on any existing saves. If a game breaking or persistent bug does occurs, please comment below or create an issue on the mods github. I will correct any problems as soon as possible but you still need to backup your save to ensure you can revert if necessary.
Special thanks to Mac Hareng.
Without his help early on, this mod would of been 10x more difficult to develop.
Please be sure to check out his amazing mods too!

I found several errors in the names and descriptions of the symptoms.
You should double-check your localization files. For example, symptoms associated with protein tests are not always true.
In the Russian version, I fixed it.

Hi U-ru-Ru,
Thanks very much, I'll get that added into the mod right away! Really appreciate the effort, I know that's quite a chunk of text to have to translate!
Can you be specific with some of the localisation issues? I'd love to fix any issues up.

Ahh damn, yeah i added a lot of those cells markers in bulk so that was a possibility, thank very much for reporting that! I'll get those fixed up right away.
Absolutely no need to apologise, I really appreciate the help! I'll be updating the mod today to include your Russian translations. I have updated the mod to v0.13 recently and I have ensured that new versions have their localisation separated to clearly identify new additions. Be sure to check localisation changes under the changelog for the updates (on github) as I try not too but some old localisation has changed.
If you do get the chance, I'd love to see your Russian translation for that version (only if you get the time and at your leisure, please never feel any pressure to do so).

I am enjoying trying your mod. It certainly is giving the clinical labs a workout! But i have one question. Is Emergency Department (Acute Medicine) supposed to be a choice for the second specialization for Oncologists? i have attached a screenshot. Several were like her. I hired two because they have good characteristics, but they will probably have to be switched to a proper specialization.

Hi Slink,
It definitely is, acute medicine lets an oncologist prescribe treatments and exams like bronchodilators and heart monitoring. Without that been the secondary skill, the oncologist couldn't do this unless I cloned the code and made my own version (I try to avoid this as it clutters things up) or modify the existing stock code (I never do this as it is too conflict prone with other mods). Just helps Oncology do more without needing to transfer the patient around too much.
Hope that helps.

I see. So it is a work-around for the game's database structure, where individual operations define who can use them, instead of specialties defining what operations they can do. I suppose their method eliminated one level of definitions, at the cost of greater flexibility. It does make for confusion in the players. Well, thank you for all the work you put into the mod.

Okay, I have another question. Should Oncology department be requesting an ELISA test without taking an ELISA sample? The test always either times out if the patient is hospitalized or the patient leaves the hospital if they are a clinical patient. Removing the timed out test makes it just pop up active again and there is no option for taking the sample. This is because the sampling is not allowed for Oncology. I have seen both displayed for other patients, yet they too have testing requested when a sample has not been taken. Those patients behave the same way. The relevant text in the vanilla game Examinations.xml is as follows.

I have done further investigation after having many patients stalled in ER because they are trying to differentiate between cancers and some other more mundane conditions. Both Neurology and General Surgery have one diagnosis each that involves the ELISA Sampling. Presumably the ELISA Testing is automatically generated. I looked in your Oncology diagnosis file and found all of your instances except one use Testing. That one uses Sampling. And Oncology cannot do sampling as it stands. I am not sure what I will do with my current hospital, but I think you need to fix your mod. Such a tremendous amount of fine work will be marred by one error, otherwise.
Edit: I changed all of your ELISA_TESTING entries to ELISA_SAMPLING entries. That fixed it for the patients in the Emergency department. When one patient needed the test in the Oncology department, I sent her to Internal Medicine. She was diagnosed as not having cancer, and went back to Emergency for her tapeworm medicine. Success, but done manually in her case.

Hi Slink,
Thanks very much for the report, I do tend to get carried away and have done that exact issue a couple of times haha.
Unfortunately you may need to periodically check and manually update the mod yourself if you use github to install the mod (if you bought the game from GOG for example). I always post the change log to github but I fortunately did notice and fixed this issue in the latest release but there are also other issues that have been corrected in the latest version, such as Oncology exams taking too much priority with the AI (labs can get pretty backed up because everyone in emergency is getting checked for cancer). So i'd definitely make sure you check out the latest version if you don't already have it now.
Unfortunately it'll be up to the users to maintain this since there is no way I can push mod updates to these types of users, I have started to include in the code a 'current version' note so you can check your version against one that is uploaded but that hasn't been implemented just yet sorry.
Thanks very much for reporting the issue though, helps me make a better mod! Hopefully I can find some solution to get that information to GOG/External Mod Users a bit easier though.

Hello sleepy068.
I am helping modders to publish their mods on "Nexus Mods", a huge platform for mods to be shared with the public.
To date i have publish 2 mods for project hospital on Nexus and i would like to have your permission to publish this mod (Oncology Department, and perhaps your other mods too) on Nexus.
You still own the mods, i just publish them on the nexus.
If you like this idea, please send me a PM.

Hello.
I am in the process of uploading your mods to Nexus.
Oncology: https://www.nexusmods.com/projecthospital/mods/4
Additional Insurance Providers (AIP): https://www.nexusmods.com/projecthospital/mods/5
Now, i would like to upload CPR also, you are the "author" of that on Steam but i know there are some additional modders working on that, can that be a problem?
Also, i have written on the nexus that they should report any problems directly to your github. (issues tab).

Now, i would like to upload CPR also, you are the "author" of that on Steam but i know there are some additional modders working on that, can that be a problem?
Also, i have written on the nexus that they should report any problems directly to your github. (issues tab).

Hi Bohauo,
Thanks very much for taking that on.
CRP is a little different though, by itself it actually doesn't add anything the player can interact with in the game, rather it adds tools new modders can use and that dependant mods require so it would probably be better to not upload this mod directly to Nexus. Rather, I'd recommend you instead pack the mod in with mods that depend on it if and when you upload such mods. That way you don't run the risk of Nexus users not realising they need CRP for that mod to actually work. Packing a mod is simply just having both mods in the same zip folder so the user installs both, you are clearly rather savvy with mods but if this isn't clear please feel free to ask for clarity.
